In the northern portion of the state flowing east to west is the Humboltd River. It is approximately 300 miles long, and was the route followed by wagon trains heading through to California. Later the western transcontinental railroad was built along this river basin.
In the western portion of the state is the Truckee River which feeds Pyramid Lake. On the border with California is the beautiful and world reknowned Lake Tahoe. It is a glacier lake in a valley in the Sierra Navada mountain range that is 22 miles long and 12 miles wide. One third of the lake is in Nevada. Just to the southeast of there is the Walker River which feeds Walker Lake.
Forming the very southeastern tip of the border with New Mexico is the Colorado River. It is intersected by the White River to form Lake Mead and continues on southward feeding Lake Mojave.
