Louisiana is bordered by Arkansas to the north, and the Gulf of Mexico to the south. The east is bordered by Mississippi, and Texas is to the west. 8,277 square miles of Louisiana are covered by water. The lowest point in the state is New Orleans at 8 feet below sea level.

 

Lakes and Rivers

 

Louisiana has many wonderful lakes and miles of riverfront shoreline. The state, of course, is famous for it's bayous. Crayfish are abundant in the bayous. The seafood available in Louisiana with it's Cajun and Creole flair, is what makes it a culinary delight!

Louisiana is separated from Texas by the Sabine River which feeds the Toledo Bend Reservoir and ends up feeding Sabine Lake by the Gulf at Sabine Pass. The Mississippi River forms the eastern border with Mississippi until we reach the boot. Then the river flows through until reaching the Gulf passing by New Orleans. The Red River cuts across the state diagonally from the northwest to the southeast to intersect the Atchafalaya River and the Mississippi.

The Calcasieu River is in the southwest portion of the state and flows south to feed Calcasieu Lake at the Gulf. The Mermentau River feeds Grand Lake and White Lake in the south central part of the state. The Vermillion River flows through Abbeyville in the south central portion of the state. Lake Pontchartrain is fed by the Tangipahoa River.

Gulf Coast

 

The Louisiana coastline of the Gulf of Mexico boasts many marshes and wetlands and are a birders paradise. At the coastline with Mississippi is Chandeler Sound. Between that and the Mississippi River is the Breton Sound. Going west from the river along the Gulf are Baratatia Bay, Atchafalaya Bay, and Vermillion Bay
