The general coastline of California is 840 miles long. Much of the coast is characterized by the Coastal Ranges rising from the shore in steep cliffs and terraces. In southern California many wide, sandy beaches can be found.
California's northern coast is rocky and scenic. Starting at the top near Oregon, we have Crescent City. Heading south from there we reach Eureka on Humbolt Bay. South of there is Fort Bragg. Located about halfway down the coast between Fort Bragg and Mendecino, is the coastal town of Caspar. The area towns located between Mendecino and Bodega Bay include Gualala, Point Arena, The Sea Ranch, and Stewarts Point. All of these areas and towns have incredible waterfront shoreline with homes on bluffs overlooking the Pacific.
Moving down the shoreline is San Francisco Bay with the metropolitan areas of San Francisco and Oakland. Moving inland from San Francisco, we have the communities along Suisun Bay and Grizzly Bay such as Suisun City and Fairfield. From San Francisco, heading south we come to Monterey Bay, with Santa Cruz on the north end, and Monterey, Carmel-by-the-Sea, and Pebble Beach at the south end.
Continuing south from there we come to Morro Bay and Cuesta-by-the-Sea. From there next we come to Pismo Beach and Grover Beach area. Here the beaches start to become wider and have more gently sloping sand. From there we head on down to Santa Barbara and then to Ventura. Between there and LA we have the coastal towns of Oxnard and Channel Islands Beach.
We have now entered the Greater Los Angeles area which includes Malibu, Santa Monica, Long Beach, Huntington Beach, Newport Beach, Palos Verdes Estates, and San Juan Capistrano.
From there its not really very much further south to Oceanside, Encinitas, and the greater San Diego area down to the Mexico border.
